Founded by the Phoenicians with the name of Gadir, The city grew to became an important Roman commercial enclave, known as Spouses. This route will take you through the vestiges of these civilizations, allowing you to travel in time through archaeological deposits, museums and streets loaded with history.

🏛 Phoenician gadir: The first navigators
The Phoenicians arrived at the Cadiz coast around the ninth century B.C., establishing a strategic settlement on Erytheia Island. Gadir became a prosperous shopping center dedicated to fishing, metal trading and purple dye making.
🔹 Gadir Archaeological Site
One of the most impressive archaeological treasures in Cádiz. This site, located under the Puppet Theater, preserves remains of Phoenician homes, streets and everyday elements that show how the first inhabitants of the city lived. Besides, houses the skeleton of “The carpet”, a Phoenician who lived in Gadir more than 2.500 years.
🔹 Museum of Cádiz – Phoenician Section
Here you can see fascinating finds, like the anthropomorphic Phoenician sarcophagi, authentic gems of archeology that show the eastern influence in the region. You will also find amphorae, Phoenician ceramics and jewelry.
🔹 Plaza de San Juan de Dios
In this emblematic square, where the Phoenician port once stood, commercial exchanges with other Mediterranean civilizations were concentrated.
🏺 Roman gadir: The greatness of Gades
With the arrival of the Romans, Gadir became Spouses, one of the richest cities in Roman Hispania, thanks to its maritime trade and tuna fishing. Under the rule of Rome, the city was filled with temples, theaters and a port that connected Hispania with the rest of the Empire.
🔹 Roman Theater of Cádiz 🎭
Discovered in 1980, This is one of the oldest Roman theaters in the Iberian Peninsula. It was ordered to be built by Lucius Cornelius Balbo, an influential Cadiz native at the court of Julius Caesar.
🔹 Roman Salting Factory 🐟
Located in the Cadiz Museum, This exhibition shows how the Romans produced tall, a fermented fish sauce that was exported throughout the Empire and considered a delicacy at the time.
🔹 Puerta de Tierra and the Roman Walls
Part of the old walls of Gades are still preserved in the Puerta de Tierra. Although they were reinforced in later centuries, Here you can see remains of Roman defensive architecture.
🔹 Temple of Hercules 🏛️
Although it has not yet been discovered, Roman sources mention that in Gades there was a great temple dedicated to Hercules, the mythical founder of the city. It is believed that it could be in the area of Camposoto (San Fernando).
