An Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve is a Natural Space of special ecological value that covers more than one continent.. This international recognition given by the UNESCO to a certain area, is based on the political will of the States that comprise it, in the conservation and sustainable use of said space and in the rapprochement of the two territories that, despite their geographical division, share aspects of their natural and cultural heritage.

The Strait is included in the following link. The Mediterranean Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve encompasses the natural areas of the eastern part of the province of Cádiz and the western part of Málaga, in Spain; and in Morocco, those of Tangier, Tetouan, Larache and Chefchaouen.
